چکیده

Hypertensive patients were treated with either chlorthalidone or frusemide for periods of two to four months. Reduction in blood pressure was seen with chlorthalidone but not with frusemide. This hypotensive effect appeared to be independent of the natriuretic effect. A significant reduction in total exchangeable potassium (KE) was seen with both agents, but no patient showed adverse symptoms or signs. Total body potassium in long-term frusemide therapy: is potassium supplementation necessary?

Measurements of total body potassium (T.B.K.) were made by whole-body counting in four groups of patients receiving oral frusemide for one year. Patients in group 1 had essential hypertension and normal renal function and received 40 mg frusemide daily without potassium supplements. Patients in group 2 were similar but received oral potassium supplements for the first four months of treatment. ...

Diuretic treatment alters clonidine suppression of plasma norepinephrine.

The effect of short-term diuretic treatment on the action of clonidine was evaluated in eight subjects with mild, uncomplicated hypertension. A single oral dose of clonidine (0.3 mg) was given before and after 1 week of therapy with hydrochlorothiazide, 50 mg, and amiloride, 5 mg, taken daily. Changes in mean arterial pressure, heart rate, plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine levels, and plasm...

Long-term converting enzyme inhibition and sympathetic nerve function in hypertensive humans.

Orthostatic hypotension is uncommon during oral converting enzyme inhibition, even when combined with salt depletion. To assess the mechanisms responsible for the cardiovascular homeostasis in this condition, we studied the blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), total plasma catecholamines (CA), and plasma renin activity (PRA) responses after 20 minutes of 60 degrees head-up tilt in four groups ...
